To assure and advance excellence in education for the profession
of pharmacy
ACPE assures excellence in education
for the profession of pharmacy by:
•Establishing
standards and criteria for the accreditation of pharmacy
programs and continuing education providers
•Promoting continuous quality improvement within its accredited groups
and itself
• Accrediting pharmacy education providers and programs
• Reporting publicly on its activities
• Encouraging innovation in pharmacy education

ACPE Strategic Goals
Goal 1: Review and update, if warranted, existing policies, procedures, and activities of the ACPE professional Degree Program Accreditation division to address feedback from stakeholders
a.Review the manner in which other health care accreditation organizations conduct their business in order to identify ideas for ACPE quality improvement
b.Analyze data and discuss implications relative to how the pharmacy degree programs have been evaluated on the 30 ACPE PharmD standards in recent years
c.Review and revise, as needed, the degree program evaluation rubrics and templates to better communicate expectations and document whether the standards had been achieved
d.Implement the new pharmacy degree program applicant review procedures
e.Develop a rubric for Board review of authorization of new applicant on-site evaluations
f.Review and revise, as needed, the manner in which On-Site Evaluation Visits are conducted, especially the review of experiential education sites and preceptors
g.Review and revise, as needed, the manner in which professional degree programs are reviewed at Board meetings
Goal 2: In collaboration with the ACPE Continuing Education Commission, review and update, if warranted, existing policies, procedures, and activities of the ACPE Continuing Education Provider Accreditation division to address feedback from stakeholders.
a. Implement a program of continuous professional development for continuing pharmacy education (CPE) administrators
b. Develop and implement a plan for the education of pharmacy state board members with oversight responsibilities concerning CPE
c. Study the advisability and feasibility of ACPE, based on specific criteria, approving individual CPE activities, in addition to the accreditation of CPE providers
d. Monitor external factors with potential impact on the CPE enterprise
Goal 3: Improve communications with ACPE stakeholders and explore collaborative projects of mutual interest.
a. Reevaluate the periodic meetings with ACPE sponsors and the annual Stakeholder Forum to better identify and implement opportunities for quality improvement
b. Identify and continue to enhance effective communication strategies, including: presentations and exhibits at national and district meetings; publications; web site enhancements; and other venues
c. Study curricular experiential education issues with the help of the sponsors (especially the AACP’s Experiential Education Section and the Institutional Research and Assessment Committee) and other stakeholder organizations to identify methods for the better assessment and accreditation review
d. Collaborate with NABP, via a joint task force, to identify mechanisms to assist the State Boards of Pharmacy in monitoring the nature and effectiveness of the continuing education activities of their pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
e. Collaborate with American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), via a joint task force, to identify the contemporary competencies for pharmacy practice in hospitals and health-systems and to harmonize these standards.
f. Explore with AACP opportunities to better promote interprofessional education improve the orientation of new pharmacy program deans, enhance pharmacy program faculty recruitment and retention, and dialogue with minority focused programs on matters of mutual interest
Goal 4: Engage in board and staff professional development and staff succession planning.
a.Institute monthly board and staff conference calls that will include discussions for professional development
b.Enhance the new board member orientation program
c.Periodically review ACPE policies and procedures with all board members
d.Develop an ACPE staff succession and transition plan
