Distance Learning

How can we ensure quality in Distance Learning?

Over the years, many colleges and schools of pharmacy have offered distance courses to pharmacists with baccalaureate degrees to enable them to earn a doctor of a pharmacy degree, while minimizing the disruption to their work and family lives. Today, a growing number of ACPE-accredited colleges and schools are developing distance-learning pathways for entry-level students to earn a Pharm.D. when family, work or finances make it impossible for them to attend a traditional, brick-and-mortar institution. These new programs improve on correspondence courses of the past by using the latest computer and video-conferencing technologies. Regardless of the method of content delivery, ACPE expects all students to have high-quality, face-to-face experiences with patients, practitioners, faculty members and each other to ensure that they will have the knowledge, abilities and values required of competent and qualified pharmacy professionals. Although ACPE’s Accreditation Standards and Guidelines apply equally to "traditional" and innovative approaches to educational delivery, the interpretation and application of the Standards may be affected by the method of delivery. Because of the continuous growth in distance-learning pathways, ACPE is working with the profession to update the Standards to reflect the changes in the current educational environment. ACPE staff is also happy to assist the colleges and schools with issues regarding technology and distance learning through staff consultation, on-line documents and training. Please contact our office with any questions.
