This paper provides definitions for competence, lifelong learning, and continuing education. The paper argues for the need to change reporting evidence of the effectiveness of CE and including information from the Institute of Medicine’s efforts in quality improvement. In addition, there is discussion about the role of CPD in preparing pharmacists to deliver medication therapy management. The paper concludes with descriptions of each stage of the CPD cycle, including planning, acting, and evaluating. Finally, the concept of CPD is related directly to health-system pharmacy, especially in regards to meeting national standards (i.e., The Joint Commission).
